About pFLASH®

Chingis Technology Corporation (Chingis) was founded in 1995 to develop and make commercially viable P-Channel Flash technology - first prototyped in the 1970s and later researched by several major technology companies such as Mitsubishi in Japan. The result of Chingis' research and development - pFLASH® - was launched in 1998 and is available in various flavors (including low-cost industry standard flash, two-in-one firmware hub/low pin count flash, SPI Serial Flash and embedded versions). All are low-power and low-voltage memories, and pFLASH technology is licensed by UMC, Matsushita and Toshiba.

Technology Advantages

pFLASH®-based memory lowers the cost of ownership by simplifying product development, product qualification and inventory logistics, and facilitates rapid release of new products by enabling flexible programming updates. pFLASH®'s inherent benefits include:
  • Competitive Flash technologies: Scalable cell structure. Easy downward migration to 0.18-micron and beyond. Key for high density Flash memories and cost competitiveness.
  • Compatible Flash memory products: Easy socket plug-in and replacement. Software command, pin-out, and package-compatible with market leaders. Product specifications of P-channel Flash memories are completely transparent to competing products.
  • Low voltage products: Require lower internal programming/erase voltages and only 1/30th the programming currents than Channel-Hot-Electron Injection. Suitable for making 1.8 Volts or 3.0 Volts-only products.
  • Fast program and erase times: Less than 30 milliseconds erase time and 12 microseconds program time. Key for higher product performance and throughput in production lines.
  • Design-in quality: No hot-hole trapping during programming, symmetrical shallow junction cell structure.
  • Combo design: Able to put Flash and EEPROM into a monolithic chip using the same design rules and process flows.
  • Easy manufacturing: Using the most popular stacked-gate etch process modules, no special process modules are required.
  • High endurance: More than 100K cycles endurance has been demonstrated at the product level. with no tunnel-oxide degradation issues during program/erase operations, Chingis' technologies are intrinsically more reliable and durable than competitive technologies.

Business Benefits

With pFLASH® flash memories, electronic board and system manufacturers can:
  • Seamlessly upward-migrate their EPROM and EEPROM applications to flash
  • Rapidly prototype systems with fast code updates and no mask changes required
  • Make instantaneous firmware changes both in-service and during high volume manufacturing cycles
  • Remotely update with in-system programming capability
  • Minimize board handling and socket insertions during manufacturing and final tests with in-system programmability
  • Reduce costs and improve performance without disruption, with industry standard packages enabling simple, transparent socket plug-in and replacement for alternative flash solutions
  • Offer low-power and high endurance products (3 Volts and below)
  • Ensure no data loss, even when power is removed
